teaching Kids to Eat Healthy

If you have kids, it’s important you start early so they will get into the habit of eating the right way.

Children will pick up bad eating habits from their parents and are naturally goint to begin to choose the same types of foods as their parents simply because that is what they are used to eating.

If the food you give them has low nutritional value, the never ending need to feed the hunger will start and gradually, over time, the percentage of body fat will increase.

Now I’m not saying you stop your kids from eating everything that’s not good for them. Deprive them from candy totally and the chances are they will get it elsewhere. If, instead, you limit it and lead them more towards healthy snacks, they will understand how to eat properly.

My grandson is eight. He snacks on some cookies and candy but doesn’t overdo it. He loves grabbing some baby carrots and celery and apples and sitting down to watch TV.

Simple Diet Solution

If you are overweight but not by much, a simple change to your diet can help you and is simple to implement.

Simply do not eat seconds if you normally do and don’t cheat and increase the amount you put on your plate to start. If you don’t generally eat seconds, cut down on your food portion.

As to snacks, try munching on carrots or apples or some other fruits and vegetables. It becomes habit forming.

Fat and Healthy Eating

The amount of fat you eat usually varies from day to day. Some meals and some days your meals will be higher in fat than other days.

Don’t worry as even high fat meals can be kept in line with healthy eating. You just have to balance those days accordingly. The average fat intake over the course of weeks and months is what is important and what you are looking at, not the fat intake of every meal and food you consume.

Now obviously eating too much fat can be a concern as diets that are high in fat are associated with breast and colon cancer. Some of the studies link high fat to prostate cancer as well.

Younger adults and adults who are very active and thus have higher calorie needs can probably eat a little more fat. Older adults and those who are not very active need to aim for a lower fat intake.

Low Calories

It makes sense that lowering your calories somewhat will help you lose weight. But it’s important to be certain you don’t overdo it and that you get the nutrients you need.

healthy foodsUnlike processed foods, healthy foods such as vegetables, fruits, legumes, beans naturally raised meats, organic poultry, raw nuts, seeds and organic eggs are naturally low in calories. If you start to eat reasonable portions of these healthy foods, you are going to reduce your caloric intake naturally, meaning you’ll begin to lose weight and won’t walk around starving to do so..

When you eat processed foods, your body really has no idea what to do with the calories; so it stores them as fat. On the other hand, eating nutritious foods allows you to benefit from the calories, meaning there is far less chance they get added to your fat reserves.
